Outdoor hose bib — drips, leaks, or won't shut off
Reported Symptom
Outdoor hose bib (sillcock) drips from spout when handle is off, leaks around the stem when on, or handle won't close fully.
Safety Warnings
- •Frost-proof sillcocks only work if the hose is disconnected for the winter. A hose left attached traps water inside the anti-freeze section and defeats the purpose entirely. Post signs near outdoor hose connections in October in cold climates.

Diagnostic Steps
Identify leak location: spout drip when off = seat washer. Water around stem during use = packing. Water from wall around the bib body = possible freeze crack.
Expected: Leak source identified.
If fails: Multiple sources = full replacement is more efficient than rebuilding an old outdoor bib.
For spout drip: remove handle (packing nut is exposed). Unscrew packing nut. Pull stem straight out. Replace rubber washer at bottom of stem. This is identical to indoor compression faucet repair.
Expected: No drip after washer replacement.
If fails: Washer replaced but still drips = valve seat is corroded. Replace hose bib.
For stem leak: tighten the packing nut slightly (clockwise). Test. If still leaking, shut off water, remove packing nut, remove old packing material (graphite string or washer), replace with new packing or packing washer.
Expected: Stem seal restored; no leak during use.
If fails: New packing installed but still leaks = bib body is cracked. Replace full hose bib.
Inspect for freeze damage (if in cold climate): a hose bib that won't fully close or has an internal crack from ice expansion must be replaced. Install a frost-proof sillcock (anti-siphon type, typically 8-12 inch stem) to prevent repeat freeze damage.
Expected: Frost-proof sillcock installed; no freeze damage risk.
If fails: Installation requires cutting into wall = may need plumber depending on access.
Solution
Seat washer and packing replacement are the same techniques as any compression faucet. For any outdoor faucet in a freeze-climate building — replace with frost-proof sillcock and ensure tenants are reminded to disconnect hoses before winter.
