Water hammer — banging pipes when fixtures shut off
Reported Symptom
Loud banging or thudding in walls when faucet is turned off quickly, toilet stops filling, or washing machine solenoid closes. Sound is a single loud bang, not rattling.

Diagnostic Steps
Identify the source fixture: isolate which shutoff causes the bang. Washing machine valves, toilet fill valves, and dishwasher solenoids are the most common sources because they close instantly.
Expected: Source fixture identified.
If fails: Banging occurs at multiple fixtures = system-wide issue; air chambers waterlogged or no hammer arrestors installed.
If building has air chambers (capped vertical pipes above shutoff valves): drain them to restore air cushion. Shut off main supply. Open lowest fixture to drain system. Air will re-enter top chambers automatically when supply is restored.
Expected: Banging resolves after air chamber restoration.
If fails: No air chambers, or chambers re-waterlog quickly = install water hammer arrestors.
Install water hammer arrestors at the most likely sources. For washing machine: thread into hot and cold supply valves before hoses. For dishwasher and ice maker: install inline on supply line. They contain a piston that absorbs pressure shocks.
Expected: Banging eliminated after arrestor installation.
If fails: Banging persists after arrestors = check water pressure (over 80 PSI causes severe hammer). Also verify pipes are secured (no loose clips in wall cavities).
Solution
Water hammer arrestors ($10-20 each) at washing machine supplies resolve most building complaints. Code-compliant new construction includes them — older buildings often don't. High static pressure (over 80 PSI) dramatically worsens water hammer.
