Refrigerator water dispenser not working
Reported Symptom
Water dispenser button or paddle pressed — no water or very slow trickle. Ice dispenser may still work.
Safety Warnings
- •Shut off water supply before removing filter or disconnecting water lines. Have towels ready — some water releases during filter change.
Possible Causes
- 1Water filter clogged or expired (most common). Supply line kinked. Water inlet valve solenoid for dispenser failed. Dispenser micro-switch failed. Frozen water tank in freezer door.

- Replacement water filter (model-specific)
- Water inlet valve (if solenoid failed)
Diagnostic Steps
Check water filter status indicator. Many units lock out dispenser when filter is overdue.
Expected: Filter indicator green/OK.
If fails: Replace water filter. This resolves majority of dispenser complaints. Reset filter indicator after replacement.
Remove and temporarily bypass water filter (install bypass plug if available). Test dispenser with filter removed.
Expected: Water flows without filter installed.
If fails: No flow with bypass = not a filter issue. Continue diagnosis.
Check water supply valve (behind unit or under sink) is fully open. Verify supply line not kinked behind fridge.
Expected: Full water pressure at supply.
If fails: Open valve, straighten line.
Hold dispenser paddle and listen for inlet valve clicking (solenoid opening). Should click when dispenser is activated.
Expected: Click audible at valve.
If fails: No click = micro-switch or control board not sending signal. Click but no water = valve solenoid stuck. Test solenoid resistance.
For units with water tank in door: if water flow is slow only when cold, door water tank may be partially frozen. Increase freezer temperature slightly for 24 hrs.
Expected: Flow improves.
If fails: Persistent freezing = check door gasket and freezer setpoint.
Solution
Replace water filter first — resolves 70%+ of dispenser complaints. Filters should be replaced every 6 months or at low-flow indication.
