Garbage disposal jammed — humming but not spinning
Reported Symptom
Disposal makes humming sound when switched on but grinding plate does not turn. Disposal may shut off after a few seconds. Strong smell of burning from motor heat.
Safety Warnings
- •NEVER put your hand inside a garbage disposal — ever. Even with power off, impellers are sharp. Always use tongs, pliers, or other tools to retrieve objects from inside the chamber. Turn off the wall switch AND verify by trying to run the disposal before reaching near the drain opening.
Possible Causes
- 1Hard object (bone, bottle cap, utensil) jammed between impeller and grinding ring
- 2Disposal motor thermal overload tripped
- 3Impeller permanently stuck from corrosion in unused unit
Tools Required
- Disposal wrench (hex/allen key — usually 1/4 inch) OR wooden broom handle
- Flashlight
- Tongs or needle-nose pliers
Diagnostic Steps
IMPORTANT: Turn disposal switch OFF. Under the sink, press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal (thermal overload button). It should click in.
Expected: Reset button clicks in.
If fails: Button won't stay in (spring-loaded) = motor is still overheated. Wait 10 minutes before trying again.
Locate the hex port at the center bottom of the disposal. Insert a 1/4 inch hex wrench (or the disposal's own wrench if included) and turn back and forth — not just one direction. This manually rotates the impeller to break the jam.
Expected: Hex wrench turns freely in both directions.
If fails: Wrench is very stiff but turns slightly = something is still jammed. Try turning harder or proceed to step 3.
Use a flashlight to look down the drain from above with disposal off. If visible, use tongs or needle-nose pliers to retrieve the jammed object. NEVER use hands inside the disposal chamber — impellers are sharp even when stationary.
Expected: Foreign object retrieved.
If fails: Object not visible or accessible = continue working hex wrench until impeller rotates freely.
After hex wrench turns freely and object is removed: run cold water, turn disposal on. Run for 30-60 seconds.
Expected: Disposal runs smoothly; drain clears.
If fails: Still humming = motor has failed from overheating. Disposal replacement needed if repeated jam-and-overheat cycle has occurred.
Solution
Jam clearing with hex wrench is a 5-10 minute fix for 90% of disposal jamming calls. Always check the reset button first — that alone often restores operation after the jam is cleared.
