HVAC thermostat not responding — system will not start or runs continuously
Reported Symptom
Thermostat display is blank, system does not respond to thermostat commands, or system runs continuously and won't shut off
Safety Warnings

Possible Causes

Diagnostic Steps
Check the thermostat display — blank screen indicates no power. For battery-powered stats: replace batteries. For hardwired stats: check the air handler/furnace control board for a blown 3A fuse on the 24V transformer circuit.
At the air handler, measure 24VAC between the R (red) and C (common) terminals on the control board — should read 24–28V AC. No voltage means a blown transformer or open control circuit.
If display is on but system won't respond: verify correct wiring at thermostat — R to R, Y to Y (cooling), W to W (heating), G to G (fan), C to C. A missing C wire causes intermittent power issues on smart thermostats.
For system that runs continuously: with power on, disconnect the Y wire at the thermostat (or at the air handler). If the system shuts off when Y is removed at the air handler, the contactor is stuck closed — replace contactor. If system stops when Y is removed at the thermostat terminal, the thermostat is sending a continuous call — replace thermostat.
Check for short circuits: with all thermostat wires disconnected from the stat, measure resistance between all wire pairs — any reading under 10k ohms indicates a short in the wire run.
Solution
- Blown 3A fuse on control board: replace fuse, identify what caused the short (often a wiring mistake or shorted thermostat wire against metal). Do not upsize the fuse.
- Missing C wire: run a new wire or use a C-wire adapter kit (Venstar Add-A-Wire) to derive common from existing wiring.
- Stuck contactor: replace contactor (see capacitor/contactor guide).
- Failed thermostat: replace with compatible model. For smart thermostats (Honeywell T6, Ecobee), verify C wire is present and system compatibility before installation.
- After any thermostat replacement: verify heat and cool both work, verify fan operates on G call, set appropriate temperature schedule.
