Sump pump discharge frozen — winterization and prevention

Reported Symptom

Sump pump activates but water does not exit building — discharge line frozen at exterior. Pump may shut off on thermal overload from blocked discharge. Water backing up in pit.

Safety Warnings

  • Never operate pump against a completely frozen discharge line — pump motor will burn out. Disconnect pump if discharge is fully frozen until line is cleared. Outdoor heat tape must be UL listed for outdoor/direct burial use.

Possible Causes

  • 1Discharge pipe buried too shallow in frost zone. Discharge pipe terminates without anti-freeze adapter. Ice dam at exterior discharge. Pump running in winter with high water table.

Diagnostic Steps

Confirm discharge is frozen: follow discharge pipe from pump to exterior. Pipe should feel cold from foundation wall forward. Ice may be visible in transparent sections or at exterior termination.

Expected: Frozen section located.

If fails: No ice found but pump not discharging: check valve stuck or discharge blocked by debris.

Thaw accessible frozen section with hair dryer — start from pump side and work outward. Do not use open flame near PVC pipe.

Expected: Discharge begins flowing as ice melts.

If fails: Cannot access frozen section: pump to temporary discharge inside until thawed. Do not run pump against frozen line — motor burnout.

For exterior termination: install freeze protection discharge adapter (allows water to escape laterally if end ices over while maintaining discharge path).

Expected: Exterior end has freeze protection.

If fails: Standard elbow at grade level ices over in severe cold — must upgrade.

Install approved outdoor heat tape on exterior discharge section. Set thermostat type — activates automatically below 35°F.

Expected: Heat tape installed and operational.

If fails: Heat tape requires GFI-protected outlet near discharge. Plan installation before next winter.

Long-term: bury discharge line 6-12 inches below frost line for the region. Extend discharge to daylight well away from foundation.

Expected: Buried section does not freeze.

If fails: Burial depth inadequate for local frost depth — contact landscaping or irrigation contractor for proper burial.

Solution

Freeze protection discharge adapters prevent the most common winter failure. Heat tape is reliable backup for exposed sections. Frozen sump pump discharge in a high water table property = flooding risk — prioritize.
