Compressed Air System - Low Pressure

Reported Symptom

Shop or facility air pressure at point of use is consistently below required setpoint. Tools running slowly or not at all.

Safety Warnings

  • Depressurize system to zero PSI before servicing any component
  • Compressed air directed at skin can cause fatal air embolism — never use to clean clothing or skin
  • Safety relief valve is factory-set to ASME code — replace only with identical-rated valve, never adjust or defeat
  • Eye protection required — risk of debris or pressurized discharge during any service
  • Isolate electrical supply before servicing compressor controls or motor

Diagnostic Steps

Check compressor cut-in and cut-out pressure settings

Expected: Cut-out: 125-150 psi (typical). Cut-in: 100-125 psi. Actual tank pressure matches

If fails: Adjust pressure switch settings. If compressor won't reach setpoint, diagnose compressor

Perform air leak survey: spray soapy water on all fittings, valves, and couplings while system is pressurized

Expected: No bubbles at any fitting or connection

If fails: Tag and repair all leaks. Even small leaks waste significant compressor capacity

Check and replace coalescing filters and particulate filters - check pressure differential gauges

Expected: Pressure drop across filter: < 5 psi

If fails: Replace filter elements. Clogged filters can drop 20-30 psi

Check demand vs. compressor capacity: measure actual CFM usage vs. compressor rated CFM

Expected: Demand (CFM at tools) should not exceed 80% of compressor capacity

If fails: Add compressor capacity or implement demand management (pneumatic tools vs electric)

Check refrigerated air dryer operation - verify dryer temperature setpoint and condensate drain

Expected: Dryer dewpoint at setpoint, condensate draining, no frost on heat exchanger

If fails: If dryer frozen, check refrigerant charge. Clear drain if blocked
