Lutron Quantum Area Controller

Programming and commissioning guide for Lutron Quantum intelligent area controller for large commercial lighting control systems. Covers zone programming, daylight harvesting, and integration with BMS.

Lutron QAP-8-I

Safety Warnings

  • High voltage wiring in lighting control panels
  • Must be programmed by Lutron certified programmer for warranty
  • Incorrect programming can affect egress lighting

System Overview

  • Controls up to 100 zones
  • Supports daylight harvesting with photosensors
  • Demand response capable
  • BACnet and DALI integration
  • Energy logging and reporting

Daylight Harvesting Setup

  1. Mount photosensor at proper location (ceiling, facing daylight)
  2. Calibrate minimum light level (full electric, no daylight)
  3. Calibrate maximum daylight (blinds open, maximum daylight)
  4. Set control response: P-zone or closed-loop
  5. Test in various daylight conditions

Occupancy Control

  • Occupancy sensors linked to zones
  • Vacancy (manual ON, auto OFF) vs. occupancy (auto ON and OFF)
  • Set timeout: 15-30 minutes typical
  • Grace warning: 5-minute dim-to-off warning recommended

Energy Reporting

  • Review monthly energy reports
  • Compare to baseline (first month of operation)
  • 10% increase triggers investigation

  • Schedule annual report to facility manager

Structured Troubleshooting

Common problems, likely causes, diagnostic steps, and safe resolution paths.

Lutron Quantum area controller — full outage on one area

High confidence
Likely Causes
  • Area controller power loss — power supply fault
  • QS backbone link failure to this area controller
  • All keypads in area lost enrollment from firmware update
  • Circuit breaker tripped on area controller power circuit
Diagnostic Steps
  1. Check area controller status LED — green = normal; amber = fault; off = no power
  2. Verify 24VDC power supply to area controller
  3. Check QS backbone cable to this controller — test continuity
  4. Review Lutron Designer event log for enrollment errors after recent firmware updates
Resolution Paths
  • Restore power supply or replace failed power supply
  • Repair backbone cable fault
  • Re-enroll area controller and all keypads after firmware update per Lutron procedure
  • Reset circuit breaker — investigate root cause before reset
